-Ensign Gerard Spencer was born in Stotford, Bedfordshire, England. He married Hannah Joannis Hills, who was born in 1618 at Great Burstead, Essex, England, on 17 December 1636 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, BNA. Gerard migrated, with his brothers, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633. He settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts by 1634 moved to Lynn Massachusetts by 1638 and to Hartford, Connecticut by 1660 and finally to Haddam, Connecticut. At Lynn on 17 December 1636 he married Hannah Joannis Hills. At Haddam he was one of the purchasers of 100,000 acres from the Indians on 20 March 1662. He was Sergeant at Lynn in 1655, Ensign in 1656, Ensign of the Haddam Train Band in 1675, and Deputy for Haddam to the Connecticut Legislature from 1674 to 1683.
 
Their daughter Hannah Spencer married Daniel Brainerd, son of John Daniel Brainerd and Hannah Ventres.
